12 Boston beer gardens and patios for a drink outside

A beer outside is a simple plan until everyone picks a different neighborhood. Boston has options on the Common, beside the Charles, near South Station and in brewery courtyards. Some are seasonal pop-ups; others have a permanent taproom behind the patio.

These Boston beer gardens and patios are worth knowing, but check seasonal dates before setting off. Outdoor hours can change with the weather, and a brewery’s indoor opening hours do not guarantee that its garden is serving. If dinner matters as much as the beer, check the food arrangements too.

Boston Harbor Distillery on the Greenway

The garden at High Street and Atlantic Avenue has a new operator for 2026. Boston Harbor Distillery took over the former Trillium location, with cocktails, beer, wine and nonalcoholic drinks. Its Greenway menu includes whiskey drinks and snacks, making it useful for a group whose drink orders extend beyond a round of IPAs.

Harpoon Beer Garden sits at the Common’s Boylston and Tremont corner alongside Emerson’s UnCommon Corner programming. The appeal is a drink outdoors with free performances on the schedule and the Common beside you. Check the current season’s program before choosing an evening; a performance can be the reason to go rather than background noise.

Cisco Brewers Seaport is at 85 Northern Avenue. The outdoor venue also offers reservable Beach Shacks for groups, with seating and a separate rental charge. Food and drinks are additional. Read the Seaport booking details carefully if you want reserved space; renting a shack and dropping in for a drink are different plans.

Castle Island Brewing’s South Boston taproom at 10 Old Colony Avenue has an outdoor patio and a drinks selection that includes beer, wine, hard seltzer and nonalcoholic options. Its location page has the current food and visiting information. Leashed, vaccinated and licensed dogs are welcome on the patio. The taproom is in South Boston, not on Castle Island itself.

Lord Hobo Boston has a restaurant and taproom at 2 Drydock Avenue, with outdoor seating beside the building. Choose it when you want a meal as well as a beer. The Boston location’s information includes reservations and the menu. Its current policy does not allow pet dogs in the taproom or on the patio.

Night Shift on the Greenway is the Dewey Square option near South Station. It works as a meeting point after work or before a train, provided you leave enough time to get back to the station. Check the garden’s seasonal hours rather than using the schedule for another Night Shift location.

Notch’s Brighton biergarten is at the Charles River Speedway on Western Avenue. Communal tables, Czech and German-style beers and neighboring food businesses make it a good choice for settling in. Notch describes the garden as open year-round, with heaters in winter. Its visiting rules allow outside food and dogs in the garden; the venue is 21-plus after 8 p.m.

Night Shift’s Esplanade garden sits along the Storrow Lagoon between Berkeley and Clarendon streets. Use the Dartmouth Street footbridge for access, as the brewery’s directions explain. It is a convenient break in a walk along the Charles. Check weather updates before crossing over specifically for a drink.

Night Shift’s Herter Park garden offers another Charles River setting, this time in Allston. It is a different destination from the Esplanade location, so send the right address when making plans. The Herter Park page lists its seasonal schedule. Make time for the surrounding park as well as the table.

Trillium Fenway

Trillium Fenway has a patio and lawn at 401 Park Drive, beside Time Out Market. You can bring food, which makes it easier to meet people who want different things to eat. The Fenway location page confirms that leashed dogs are welcome on the patio. Match your plans to this location, not Trillium’s former Greenway garden.

Dockside Beer Garden

Dockside is outside the New England Aquarium on Central Wharf, with beers, cocktails and food including sandwiches and salads. It is a straightforward option for a break during a waterfront walk. The Aquarium’s dining page lists Dockside’s hours separately from the Aquarium and its indoor cafe; do not assume they all close together.

Roundhead’s traveling beer gardens

Roundhead takes its beer garden into Boston parks on a changing seasonal schedule. For 2026, the city announced stops in six parks, with the series running through September 19. Use Roundhead’s information for future park announcements. This is a program to plan around, not a permanent garden that remains at one address throughout the year.

Before choosing a Boston beer garden

For a group, decide whether you need a guaranteed table or are comfortable taking your chances. Reserved enclosures and private events can involve rental charges or minimum spending. Read what is included before comparing the price with an ordinary walk-in visit.

Dog rules, outside-food policies and age restrictions differ between locations, even within the same brewery. Check those details before inviting everyone. For another outdoor-drinks option, our Boston rooftop bars guide takes the search upstairs.
