Finding internships in Boston means sorting through a lot of impressive names and a much smaller number of roles you can actually apply for. A hospital research program may require a particular year of study. A technology internship may be for doctoral students. A company with a Boston office may be hiring interns somewhere else.
These ten employers and programs are places to start your search across Boston and Cambridge. They cover different subjects and education levels, so read the eligibility requirements before spending an evening on a cover letter. Internships in Boston and Cambridge to put on your shortlist
Google’s software engineering internship is worth checking if you have programming experience and an interest in building software at a large company. Its summer 2027 undergraduate posting includes Cambridge among the possible work locations and asks for coding experience in at least two general-purpose languages. Start with Google’s student and early-career pages, then read the individual posting. Listing Cambridge as a preference does not guarantee placement there.
Microsoft Research New England
The Cambridge research lab offers paid twelve-week internships, usually in summer. Its work spans subjects including machine learning, economics, computational biology, cryptography, and social media. Look for a research match with the team and check the degree requirements on the opening. A research internship here is a different application from a general Microsoft software engineering role.
Massachusetts General Hospital
MGH’s Administrative Internship is for master’s students interested in healthcare management. Interns work within a hospital department with an administrative or executive director as a mentor. Projects can involve operations, data analysis, budgets, and service planning. This is an opportunity to study how a hospital runs, rather than an undergraduate clinical placement or permission to provide patient care.
Boston Consulting Group
BCG’s internship programs include consulting, technology, and business services. Applicants can come from undergraduate, advanced-degree, or MBA programs, with the appropriate route determined by the role. Check the campus-specific recruiting page as well as the job listing: application windows vary. Fidelity Investments
Fidelity’s ten-week summer internship program covers more than investing. Boston appears among the locations for areas such as finance, client relations, corporate services, and audit, risk, and compliance. The general program asks students to apply in the fall of their sophomore or junior year. Asset-management opportunities have their own routes and timelines, so use the page for the work you want.
Biogen
Biogen’s student programs distinguish twelve-week summer internships from six-month co-ops. Cambridge is one of its principal U.S. locations, with assignments across scientific and business teams. The company requires students to be enrolled or returning to another educational program after the placement. Someone who has finished school and is not returning should look at its regular job openings instead.
Harvard Stem Cell Institute
The HSCI Internship Program places undergraduates in faculty laboratories for nine weeks of stem-cell research. The program includes a weekly seminar and a final research presentation. Its current page says applications for summer 2027 are expected to open in December 2026. It explicitly excludes high school and graduate students, an important detail before you begin an application.
MIT Summer Research Program
MSRP General is a route for eligible undergraduates at other U.S. institutions who are considering graduate research. It has specific academic, enrollment, and work-authorization requirements. Liberty Mutual
Liberty Mutual’s early-talent programs include actuarial work, analytics, claims, finance, data science, and technology. The company says recruiting for many programs starts in September and proceeds on a rolling basis. Filter the openings for Boston and read the team’s description. An insurance company needs people who can write software and interpret data as well as people who want to work directly with customers.
Vertex Pharmaceuticals
Vertex’s co-op program includes research, drug development, regulatory work, communications, finance, and other business functions. Participants must be enrolled in a degree program and available for full-time work throughout the placement. The program page also spells out work-authorization and sponsorship restrictions. Check the dates on the actual vacancy; a six-month co-op requires a different arrangement with your school from a summer internship.
Before you apply
Keep a simple list of each role’s location, deadline, required documents, pay, and dates. Add the exact eligibility rule, including whether you must return to school afterward. Where a page still shows a completed summer, wait for the next announced cycle or contact the program rather than carrying an old deadline forward by a year.
Then make the application specific. Explain the project you worked on, the method you used, and what you learned. The employer already knows its own reputation; your application has to tell it something about you.
