Emerson Colonial Theatre, theater in Downtown

Emerson Colonial Theatre

Emerson Colonial Theatre has a long connection to Broadway: Oklahoma!, Carousel and Follies all played here before their New York runs. Opened in 1900, the Boylston Street theater continued that tradition when it reopened after restoration in 2018 with the world premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Boston audiences got to see it before Broadway did.

Today, you can catch touring musicals, plays, concerts and conversations with well-known guests, so there’s plenty to consider even if musicals aren’t your thing. If you’re curious about what happened here before your visit, scheduled historical tours offer a closer look at the building and the shows that helped make its name.
