16 Boston festivals to build a day around

Boston festivals can take over a riverbank, a square or a whole evening. Some ask you to choose a ticket and a seat. Others let you spend an afternoon listening to bands, meeting artists and deciding what to eat next.

This list covers Boston and nearby communities, with Lowell identified as a separate day trip. Summer 2026 events have passed; the upcoming fall dates below are for 2026. Where the next edition has not been announced, use the organizer’s link for updates rather than carrying an old date into a new year.

The Boston Book Festival brings authors and readers to Copley Square for free programming. Its 2026 festival is October 17. Look through the sessions before going so you can choose conversations you want to hear, rather than spending the day discovering that your favorite author finished ten minutes ago.

HONK! brings activist street bands to Somerville, with its next festival planned for October 9–11, 2026. Brass, percussion and public participation are central to the event. Follow the published schedule for individual performances and activities; this is a festival to hear outside with other people, rather than from an assigned concert seat.

The Boston Comedy Festival lists November 10–14 for its 2026 edition. Its competition brings comedians from around the country, alongside other shows and guests. Pick by performer or show format, then check the actual venue. A festival ticket for one night is not automatically admission to every event on the calendar.

The festival’s organizer listing gives November 20–22, 2026, at the Mosesian Center for the Arts in Watertown. The program combines professional and student films with filmmaking activities. Read the screening descriptions for age suitability before booking; a festival for families can still contain programs aimed at different ages.

The Annunciation Cathedral community’s 2026 Greek festival runs September 18–20 at the Cathedral Center on Goddard Avenue in Brookline. Check the festival’s current program before visiting. The location matters: the event name refers to the cathedral community, but it does not send you to a downtown Boston street festival.

Snowport’s holiday market brings shopping and seasonal food to the Seaport. Check the organizer’s Snowport page for the new season’s admission arrangements, vendors and hours. Its main overview still refers to the 2025–26 season, so last winter’s curling reservations or special appearances should not be treated as this winter’s schedule.

Boston Calling is pointing ahead to its 2027 return at the Harvard Athletic Complex. It is the option here for a large ticketed music festival, with different acts across multiple stages. Wait for the confirmed program before buying around a particular artist, and compare single-day options with a weekend commitment.

The Boston Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival combines racing on the Charles with cultural performances, food and arts activities near the John W. Weeks Bridge. The organizer is looking ahead to June 2027 after its 2026 edition. Check the race and cultural schedules separately if you want to see both.

The Boston Early Music Festival holds its next biennial festival June 6–13, 2027. Baroque opera and early-music performances are central to its work. It also presents concerts between festival editions, so you do not have to wait two years to attend something. Choose the performance first, then confirm its venue and ticket.

Harborfest organizes history programming, performances and waterfront celebrations around Independence Day. Its 2026 edition ran July 2–4. Follow the next schedule for individual events and fireworks. Harborfest’s harbor display is separate from the Pops fireworks on the Charles, a distinction worth making before heading out with a blanket.

The Hatch Memorial Shell is the performance setting for the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. Check the official Pops event page for the next Independence Day program and entry instructions. Decide whether you want to attend the concert or mainly see the fireworks, because those choices affect where you should spend the evening.

The Chợ Đêm Night Market celebrates Vietnamese culture in Fields Corner with food, entertainment, games and vendors. The free 2026 event took place July 18 on Dorchester Avenue and at Town Field Park. Follow Boston Little Saigon for the next announcement, and arrive hungry enough to try more than one vendor.

The Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts held its 2026 celebration at Franklin Park, with live music, Puerto Rican food, arts and crafts, rides and a parade. It was not at City Hall Plaza. Check the next festival and parade information separately before choosing where to arrive.

Boston Jazz Fest presents free performances at Maritime Park in the Seaport. Its 2026 weekend was August 28–29. Use the organizer’s next program to choose a set or spend longer listening. This is a different event from the Charles River Jazz Festival and Cambridge Jazz Festival, despite the similar names.

The Boston Arts Festival takes place at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park and brings together visual artists, craftspeople and musicians. Admission is free. You can meet the people selling their work, from ceramics to photography, while live music runs nearby. Check the next edition’s dates before making a September plan.

Make the Lowell Folk Festival a day trip: its stages are in downtown Lowell, outside Boston. Free performances cover traditional music and dance, with craft demonstrations and food sold by nonprofit organizations. The 2026 edition has passed. When the next program arrives, leave room between sets to eat and walk between stages.

Before choosing a Boston festival

Read the program before buying a pass. A multi-day festival may sell individual performances separately, and free entry does not mean food, workshops or every related event is included. For outdoor events, check the organizer’s weather updates and the entrance location, especially when a festival uses several streets or stages.
