Modern Theatre

The Modern Theatre at Suffolk University is the 185-seat playhouse at 525 Washington Street, in the Theatre District. Suffolk bought the building in 2008 and rebuilt it behind the restored facade, student rooms above. The original Modern was Boston’s first theater designed for movies; in 1928 it showed the city’s first talkie, The Jazz Singer. Public nights mix plays, musicals, films, and talks, including Suffolk Theatre Department productions. Lobby and box office open one hour before each event. Buy tickets online or at the window that night if seats are left, cash or card. The phone, (617) 557-6537, is answered only in that hour. Otherwise email boxoffice@suffolk.edu. Get there 15 minutes early. Wheelchair accessible. Not open between shows.
