Bell in Hand
Bell in Hand on Union Street traces its history to 1795, but you can come here for a lobster roll without turning lunch into a history lesson. The menu covers clam chowder, raw oysters, fish and chips, burgers and salads. Its shepherd’s pie combines beef, corn and peas with mashed potatoes and puff pastry, while the lobster grilled cheese puts three cheeses to work.
The tavern is close to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, making it an easy place to sit down during a downtown walk. It opens daily at 11 a.m., and the kitchen serves until midnight. The bar stays open later, until 2 a.m., which makes the distinction useful if you’re arriving hungry after an evening out.
