A hot dog can be a Castle Island lunch, part of a Red Sox game or the surprisingly sensible thing to order alongside a cocktail. Boston has room for all three. The difference is what comes with it: a waterfront walk, a ballgame or a bar tab.
These five Boston hot dog spots include straightforward counter orders and one that uses Wagyu beef. Choose the outing you want as well as the food. Fenway Park requires a ticketed visit; the restaurant down the street does not. A hot dog is a very good reason to leave the house, but it need not involve stadium admission.

Sullivan’s Castle Island serves a grilled Kayem hot dog with a natural casing on a toasted roll. Its Castle Island menu also has a chili dog with cheddar, giving you a choice between a straightforward order and one that requires more attention to your shirt.
The setting is a large part of the reason to go. Pick up lunch and make time for the waterfront rather than treating the visit as a quick food collection. Sullivan’s first opened here in 1951, and hot dogs still share the menu with burgers and seafood. Make sure you are checking the Castle Island branch when looking at hours or ordering; there is also a Hanover location.

Simco’s on Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan is the stop for hot dogs, fries and onion rings without a restaurant reservation. Its menu includes a plain hot dog, a chili version and cheese options, with combinations that add a side. Decide how much you want before ordering everything separately.
The larger menu covers pizza, subs and seafood, which is useful if your companions are not as committed to the hot dog plan as you are. Use the Mattapan address at 1509 Blue Hill Avenue when arranging pickup. The menu is broad enough for a mixed order, but there is no need to make lunch more complicated than a hot dog and the side you came for.

Tasty Burger – Fenway

Tasty Burger’s Fenway shop puts hot dogs on the menu alongside the burgers at 86 Van Ness Street. The current ordering menu lists an all-beef dog on a toasted potato bun, a chili-cheese version and the Zum Zum with sauerkraut, grain mustard and celery salt.
The Two Dog Night meal combines two hot dogs with a choice of fries or tots and a drink. Compare that with the individual items if you are ordering a full meal. The location gives you an option near Fenway Park without buying admission to a game, and the burger and chicken selections make it easy for someone else to order something different.

Fool’s Errand takes the hot dog in a different direction. Tiffani Faison’s Boylston Street bar lists a Wagyu beef hot dog in a brioche bun on its snack menu. It sits alongside French onion dip, marinated olives and a separate caviar service, rather than a long list of fast-food combinations.
Come here when you want a bar visit with something to eat. The restaurant describes itself as an adult snack bar and serves cocktails, beer and wine. Check its current opening days before planning lunch: this is an evening option. Caviar is its own menu item, so do not assume it arrives on the hot dog.

Fenway Park

The Fenway Frank belongs to the ballpark experience. Kayem’s company history dates its role as the official hot dog and sausage of the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park to 2009. The Chelsea company supplies a familiar part of the game-day menu.
Choose it when you are already going to a game and want to eat inside the park. A ballpark visit has ticket and concession costs, so it is a different proposition from stopping at a lunch counter. Leave time to buy food before settling into your seat, and check the menu at the stand you use rather than assuming every concession sells the same items.
Choose the stop that fits the day
For lunch with a walk, start at Castle Island. For a hot dog before a game without paying ballpark food prices, compare Tasty Burger’s current menu before going through the gates. For a Mattapan stop, use Simco’s Blue Hill Avenue address. Fool’s Errand makes sense when drinks are part of the plan.
