Sammy Carlo’s Delicatessen and Catering is at 567 Bennington Street in East Boston, at Bennington and Moore. Phone (617) 567-0058. Call for hours. Carmelo Scire opened a market on Drake Street in 1927 after leaving Sicily. The shop moved around Eastie and settled at this corner in the 1950s. Steve Scire took it over from his father Sammy in 1984 and, with Kathy, turned the grocery into a breakfast, lunch, and catering counter. Steve’s three children still work part-time. The food is made-to-order subs and soups, including Kathy’s homemade beef stew. Former Mayor Marty Walsh called it out as Business of the Year. This is the East Boston deli, not a generic sandwich shop with no history. Come for a sub.
