Galleria Umberto
Galleria Umberto serves square slices of Sicilian pizza on Hanover Street, with arancini and calzones filling out a short menu. Founded by Umberto Deuterio in 1974, the North End shop received a James Beard America’s Classics award in 2018. Inside, a counter and a large map of Italy set the scene for a straightforward lunch. You come to choose from what the kitchen has made that day, then eat and get on with your afternoon. Make it an early stop on a North End visit: the shop has long closed when its pizza sells out. Bring cash, and save your elaborate dinner plans for elsewhere. A slice and an arancino are a much simpler proposition.
