Inside Fenway Gallery and the studios born from a Boston fire

Fenway Gallery comes with a pretty extraordinary backstory. Its home was built for artists after a devastating Boston fire, and more than a century later, they are still working there.

Inside Fenway Gallery and the studios born from a Boston fire

Fenway Gallery is at 30 Ipswich Street, inside a building created specifically to give artists somewhere to live and work. You can go for an exhibition, catch a musical performance when one is scheduled, and find yourself in a place whose reason for existing goes back to a devastating fire in 1904. at Fenway Art Studios

The gallery and the studios have different histories, but together they make a good reason to spend an afternoon looking at what Boston artists are making now. The building has been serving artists since 1905, and its present-day gallery gives visitors a way into that continuing story. friendsoffenwaystudios.org

Art and music at Fenway Gallery

Fenway Gallery is a nonprofit exhibition venue showing emerging and established artists. That gives it a broader purpose than displaying the work of the people who have studios in the building, although the connection to that working community is part of its appeal. The Fenway

Its programming also includes live music. The gallery’s own website documents exhibitions alongside performances by singer-songwriters, instrumentalists and Berklee College of Music students. In April 2026, for example, guitarists Henry Craft and Micah Perry performed during a reception. A visit can involve looking at artwork and hearing musicians in the same space, provided you choose a date with a performance. at Fenway Art Studios

Check the exhibition and event announcements before deciding when to go. Shows change, and a gallery website can keep older posters online long after an event has finished. Treat the date on the announcement as part of the plan, rather than assuming everything on the page is happening next weekend.

The fire that led to Fenway Studios

In 1904, a fire destroyed Harcourt Studios on Irvington Street, where artists lost their workplaces and much of their work. Boston’s business and civic leaders responded by helping organize a replacement, with members of the Copley Society and St. Botolph Club involved in the effort. friendsoffenwaystudios.org

According to Friends of Fenway Studios, artists helped establish four priorities for the new building: plentiful north light, spacious rooms, a convenient location and affordable rents. It is a wonderfully practical list, and a reminder that making art requires somewhere to put the easel and enough light to see what you are doing.

Architects Parker and Thomas designed the building, and artists moved in during 1905. The resulting Arts and Crafts structure had 46 studios, each with north-facing windows 12 feet high. Its layout drew inspiration from the Paris studios where many of the original artists had studied. friendsoffenwaystudios.org

Keeping the building in artists’ hands

Fenway Studios is a National Historic Landmark, and artists still live and work there. Its history includes painters such as Edmund Tarbell, Joseph DeCamp, William Paxton and Lilla Cabot Perry, while today’s residents work across different styles and materials. Fenway Studios

Keeping the building in use has taken effort. By 1974, it was poorly maintained and owed nearly $200,000 in back taxes. Artist-tenants organized to buy it, and a mortgage secured in 1981 helped pay for improvements and establish a nonprofit artists’ cooperative. The studios’ history describes the financial difficulties involved in getting that far. Fenway Studios

That is part of what makes visiting interesting. The history includes people doing the fairly unglamorous work of protecting affordable studios, alongside the paintings made inside them. A building can have a handsome exterior and an impressive past, but keeping it useful to artists is a separate achievement.

Planning your visit

The gallery is at 30 Ipswich Street, with The Fenway’s directory listing Sunday hours of noon to 4 p.m. Confirm the gallery’s latest announcements before making a special trip, particularly if you are going for a specific show or performance. The Fenway

A gallery visit does not mean the individual studios are open for wandering. Fenway Studios describes an annual Open Studios weekend as the opportunity for the public to visit the building. Look for a dated announcement from the studios before planning around it, since the website also contains older event information. Fenway Studios

For a regular visit, go for the exhibition and look for a music event that interests you. If you want to see where the work gets made, save the next Open Studios announcement and come back when the artists open their doors.
