Thousands of Boston Sports Clubs members are finally getting paid back
After years of complaints, former Boston Sports Clubs members are about to see their money again.
The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office is distributing nearly $4 million to around 47,000 people who were charged while gyms were closed during the pandemic.
A court found the company billed members for April 2020 despite all locations being shut down from mid March through July. Leadership was also found to have made cancellations difficult and ignored requests from members trying to get out.
More than 2,000 people filed complaints saying they tried to cancel through calls, emails, and messages with no real response. Many said they were still charged anyway.
Eligible members will receive an email with instructions to claim their refund. The average payout is about $85.
Boston Sports Clubs filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and later restructured. Today, only a few locations remain in the Boston area under the New York Sports Club name.
