Know what DashPass actually saves in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts detail is worth knowing. DoorDash’s published fee guidance currently lists a service fee of 15% of the subtotal for most orders here, compared with 5% for most eligible DashPass restaurant orders. A minimum service fee can still apply.

For a hypothetical $30 food subtotal, those percentages work out to $4.50 and $1.50 before any minimums or other charges. That is a $3 difference in the service fee alone, which is more useful to understand than a large FREE DELIVERY banner. DoorDash Help Center

If you order infrequently, a monthly subscription can easily cost more than it saves. If you order several times a month from eligible restaurants, compare the actual checkout totals before deciding.

Consider Uber One if you already use Uber

Uber One costs $9.99 a month and combines eligible Uber Eats benefits with ride benefits. That makes it worth a look if Uber is already part of your week, rather than another subscription bought solely because you are hungry.

For delivery, the membership offers $0 delivery fees on eligible orders within the standard delivery radius, along with discounted service fees. The restaurant’s minimum order amount appears on its storefront.

Long-range delivery and optional priority fees can still be extra. A membership does not make every restaurant equally sensible to order from, especially if your dinner is coming from the other side of the city. Uber

The practical move is to check whether your regular restaurants qualify, then compare the final price with the memberships you already have. Paying for overlapping benefits makes much less sense than using the one that fits your routine.

Open the restaurant’s website before the app

Boston restaurants also have their own ordering routes, and opening the restaurant’s website first takes very little effort. Tasty Burger offers online ordering for both takeout and delivery, so you can start there rather than automatically opening an app. tastyburger.com

Da LaPosta in Newtonville is another useful example. Its website lists a direct ordering option alongside DoorDash, Grubhub, Uber Eats and Slice, giving you several routes to the same restaurant without hunting through search results. Da LaPosta

Direct ordering is not automatically cheaper, and it does not necessarily mean the restaurant employs the driver. Compare the menu prices and checkout total instead of treating the word direct as a guarantee.

Compare the whole order

Build the same order on two services, using the same restaurant location, portions and delivery address. Then compare the total after discounts and fees, with the same tip amount.

Check the arrival estimate as well. Saving a couple of dollars may be worthwhile on a relaxed night in; it may be less appealing when you need dinner before leaving for something.

If the restaurant is nearby, compare pickup too. You might decide that walking over is worth the saving, or that paying someone to bring dinner to your door is exactly what tonight calls for.

The point is to make that choice with the whole price in front of you. Once you know which membership you already have, which restaurants qualify and what the final bill looks like, ordering dinner can get back to being easy.
