The Boston theatre scene has seen its fair share of groundbreaking performances, but none quite like the recent show, "Fat Ham." As the autumn leaves start to fall, the Huntington at Calderwood/BCA unveils its rendition of this deliciously funny, Pulitzer Prize-winning play from September 22 to October 29, 2023.
A Modern Take on a Classic Tale
Directed by the super-talented Stevie Walker-Webb, in collaboration with Alliance Theatre and Front Porch Arts Collective, "Fat Ham" presents a contemporary spin on Shakespeareโs classic, effectively weaving elements of humor, cultural significance, and familial ties. This production is an ode to the Bard, with a twist that resonates deeply with modern-day audiences.
The Story
At the heart of "Fat Ham" is Juicy, a young queer Black man navigating life in the Southern United States. Juicy desires to carve out his path and identity, which becomes all the more complicated when the ghost of his father decides to make a surprise appearance at a backyard barbecue. With demands for revenge on his fatherโs murder, Juicy faces the age-old dilemma: to act or not to act?
This narrative takes a powerful look at the challenges faced by queer Black individuals in today's world while adding layers of family expectations, generational trauma, and the quest for self-identity.
Broadwayโs Latest Sensation
Before gracing the stage in Boston, "Fat Ham" took Broadway by storm earlier in the spring. Its vibrant mix of humor and pathos, combined with a smart reinterpretation of Shakespeare's timeless work, has ensured its position as a modern classic in the making.
For those familiar with Shakespeareโs oeuvre, the themes will undoubtedly resonate. But even for those less acquainted with the Bard's tales, "Fat Ham" offers a universal story about family, identity, and the age-old quest for understanding oneself amidst external pressures.
