Praise Art Gallery: Artist's Talk with Madeline Donahue

The Praise Shadows Art Gallery in Brookline has hosted some great artist talks and events in the past that are fantastic opportunities for Bostonians to learn more about the art community. Good news… they are hosting another event!

This Artists Talk focuses on Madeline Donahue, whose work is, “honest, joyful, and reflective of the celebrations and complexities that come with being a mother. Her work encourages the dialogue about mothers' shifting roles during the pandemic— women having to be mothers, teachers, caretakers, professionals” says the Praise Art Gallery. Madeline currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and she received her MFA at Brooklyn College in 2018 while giving birth to her daughter just 6 weeks prior to starting the program. She also completed her BFA from SMFA at Tufts University in Medford, MA as well as taking many classes in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Rollercoaster, 2021

Jayna Mikolaitis, an art-lover who works at the PAG, describes Donahue’s work as “exploring the overwhelming absurdity, intimacy, and joy of caring for another person. Her focus is on the surreal reality, physicality, and interdependence of the mother and child relationship. Using humor, she addresses the simultaneous existence of the abject and sublime. Humor is also present in her bright color palette. The paintings and ceramic sculptures are sometimes small in scale which connects to the intimate nature of her work. She creates each work in one day. Her process is fresh and fluid. The resulting work is reflective of her present moment.”

As Mother’s Day is rapidly approaching this is a great opportunity to dive into the world of art that represents women and mothers! Listening to the Artist’s Talk will give you a new viewpoint and insight into the works of Donahue.

The Artist’s Talk will take place on Monday, April 26th, 2021 at 7 p.m.
