Boston Movies You Need To Watch (Out Now And Coming Soon)

Imagine this: you’re sitting on the couch, snow falling, looking for your next movie to watch. You scroll endlessly through Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ only to find nothing. Does this sound like you? If so, here are some Boston-based movies I recommend you watch these films:

Don’t Look Up

I know this movie isn’t out yet but I can’t wait to watch it! Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Evans and others in a star-studded cast, Don’t Look Up created a buzz in Boston when it was known that part of a comedic film was going to be shot. This is not the only place where the movie was filmed, as other places for the movie include Wheaton College, Salisbury Beach, the DCU Center and various locations across Massachusetts.

Though there is no timeline of when Don’t Look Up will be released, we do know the plot of the film — Lawrence and DiCaprio will be playing of astronomers who discover that an asteroid is heading for Earth. Fearing this, they try to warn the public about this danger, everyone seems to not be taking the warning seriously.

This already sounds epic and the trailer hasn’t even came out yet.

Sound of Metal

When I watched this trailer, I knew I had to watch this movie, and it did not disappoint. Starring rapper Riz Ahmed, the movie tells of Ruben, a punk metal drummer that is told that he is losing his hearing at an exponential rate, making him believe that his career is over. When his bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cook) helps him find a house for the deaf that accepts him for who he is, Ruben has to make a decision: either stay with this group or take back the life he once knew.

Outside of being filmed in Boston, Sound of Metal scenes of the movie came from Cambridge, Danvers, Lawrence and other locations throughout the Greater Boston area. The movie is a must-watch and will make you to know what’s going to happen next. Even Rotten Tomatoes was in awe of the movie, giving it a score of 97%.

Good Will Hunting

A classic that is a top-five movie in all time in my eyes. Starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, the great Robin Williams and other in this high-caliber cast, Good Will Hunting focuses on Will Hunting (Matt Damon) who is shown to intellectual, but decides to take a job as a janitor at MIT. It was when Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard) of MIT watches the janitor solve a graduate-level math problem that he takes upon himself to unlock Hunting’s potential at all costs.

Though most of the movie was filmed in Toronto, if you look close enough, you will realize that some of the scenes of the movie were shot in across the Greater Boston area, some being MIT, L Street Tavern, Harvard Square and Boston Public Garden.

Super Troopers & Super Troopers 2

Generally, I am a big fan for comedy movies and if it wasn’t for one of my friends showing me Super Trooper and Super Trooper 2, I would not be writing about them. Despite the mixed reviews, I enjoyed watching these movies, as I had tears in my eyes by the end of the movie.

Starring Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and others, both movies star the Vermont State Trooper fantastic five (Thorny, Farva, Rabbit, Foster and Mac) in efforts to show who’s boss against the local police, avoiding the shutdown of their program and providing law enforcement to a French-Canadian town that is transitioning to American rule.

Though Super Troopers was filmed in New York, the subsequent film was filmed in Massachusetts, with cities such as Concord, Marlborough, Sudbury and other locations being the primary focus for the movie.

I cannot say enough about this movie and how funny it was. It will take you about half a day to watch the movies back-to-back but I promise that it is well worth your time. Also, referencing lines and scenes is likely to happen.

Ted & Ted 2

Hands down my favorite comedy movies to watch when I need a laugh. Watching Seth MacFarlane and Mark Wahlberg together is like watching like watching Batman and Robin. Both duos work together well, the only difference is, well, MacFarlane and Wahlberg are funnier.

Starring the dynamic duo of MacFarlane and Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and even Morgan Freeman, Ted focuses on John Bennett (Wahlberg) wishing his teddy bear Ted (Seth MacFarlane) to come alive, only to happen thirty years later. The relationship the two build causes problems for Bennett’s girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis), who forces an ultimatum between her and Ted. Following Ted, Ted 2 shows different lifestyles for both John and Ted, as they are married to the women of their dreams. It is not until Ted wants to adopt a child that problems develop, as he is considered to be property and not a person. Upset about this, Ted looks to consult a lawyer (Amanda Seyfried) to help prove that teddy bear or not, he can properly adopt a child.

Pop quiz: Where do you think the movie was filmed? If you said Boston, that is correct. Outside of Boston, both Ted and Ted 2 were filmed in Chelsea, Everett, Somerville, Malden, Danvers just to name a few places.

There is nothing I would want to do more than hang out with your significant other, a bunch of friends, or your family, as these movies would be the conversation at the dinner table, the talk among the group, what your whole family will talk about. If you want a movie filled with inappropriate language, drugs and alcohol and a good time, then this is the movie for you.

Just know these movies were wicked good.

The Town

I’ll admit I’m a not a big thriller movie fan, but when I watched The Town, I was fascinated with the movie. Not because I’m watching something different than comedy, but the plot grabbed my interest, making me want to watch it more, and eventually rewatch it again when I’m in the mood to watch something different.

Starring Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm and other talented actors, The Town centers around Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) and how he robs stores for a living with his brother James (Jeremy Renner). Doug’s life turns upside down when he decides to rob a bank with his brother, where he takes Claire Keesey — an employee of the bank — as hostage. During this time, he learns that Claire lives in his neighborhood, eventually having him look for her and discover more about her. The more Doug learns about her, the more he falls in love with her, with the relationship getting stronger that he decides he want to live a cleaner life with Claire, as this looks to be an obstacle for the two.

The Town was filmed in various areas of the Greater Boston area, including Boston, Cambridge, Melrose, Somerville and Walpole.
